New Bali-Phuket Flight Adds 700 Weekly Seats

For Phuket property, access matters. A new direct flight may look like tourism news, but it also shapes who can visit easily, how often they come, and whether short breaks turn into longer interest. TransNusa Airlines has launched a four-times-weekly Bali-Phuket service, adding approximately 700 seats per week between Indonesia and Thailand’s leading island market. The inaugural flight arrived on 9 September 2026 at full capacity with 174 passengers, welcomed by representatives of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), TransNusa Airlines and Airports of Thailand. The service operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays using an Airbus A320-200. Flight 8B541 departs Bali at 11.30 and arrives in Phuket at 14.35, with the return service leaving Phuket at 16.40.

Why this route matters for Phuket

Indonesia is a short-haul market with growing travel frequency to Thailand. From 1 January to 7 September 2026, Thailand recorded 429,778 Indonesian arrivals, tracking toward TAT’s 2026 target of 890,000. The 2025 full-year figure was 787,524. TAT’s data shows that 84.70 per cent of Indonesian visitors travel independently, and 52.86 per cent are repeat visitors. Bangkok, Songkhla, Chon Buri, Phuket and Krabi are the five leading destinations. Thai cuisine, historical attractions, community-based experiences, spa treatments and beach activities rank among their preferred pursuits. For Phuket property, the relevant detail is that more than half of Indonesian visitors are repeat travellers. Repeat visitors are the people most likely to try rental accommodation, consider longer stays, and build familiarity with specific areas.

Ocean Worldwide field note

Connectivity is not the same as demand. In our own client work we have seen no visible increase in buyers arriving from Bali, and the digital nomads we deal with split cleanly: those with children choose Phuket for the schools, hospitals and infrastructure, while younger child-free nomads choose Bali, with Koh Samui and Koh Phangan as smaller alternatives. A new flight makes visiting easier. What turns a visitor into a buyer is still what they find when they get here.

The broader Indonesian connection to Thailand

The Bali-Phuket service is TransNusa’s second new direct route to Thailand in just over a month. The airline launched a Jakarta-Bangkok service on 6 August 2026. Both routes follow a Memorandum of Understanding signed by TAT and TransNusa Airlines in Jakarta on 4 August 2026, covering destination marketing, travel product development and enhanced air connectivity. Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said the Bali-Phuket service “advances TAT’s Airline Focus strategy and supports the Thai Government’s Ease of Travelling policy by expanding convenient air access within Southeast Asia. The route creates new opportunities to attract Indonesian travellers to Phuket’s beaches, gastronomy, culture, wellness and lifestyle experiences.” The connection between Bali and Phuket is natural. Both are island destinations with strong villa and lifestyle property markets, warm-water coastlines, and established communities of long-stay visitors and foreign property owners. Easier travel between the two should encourage cross-market familiarity.

What the figures show about Indonesian demand

The inaugural flight arrived at full capacity. That suggests immediate demand exists, though one full flight does not confirm sustained load factors. TAT data shows Indonesian visitors are motivated by food and beverages, destination diversity and shopping. Phuket offers all three, along with villa rental options, wellness facilities and beach access that align with those preferences. For owners of rental villas, 700 extra weekly seats from Bali may support incremental demand in the shoulder seasons or on weekdays, when direct access matters more than in high season. The open question is whether four flights a week can sustain occupancy beyond the launch period.

The detail buyers should watch

The real estate relevance of a new route is never immediate. It builds as visitor numbers grow, familiarity increases, and short trips turn into repeat visits or rental bookings. For buyers comparing Phuket with other resort markets, the expansion of direct flights from Indonesia is worth noting. It adds another layer of regional connectivity, which supports tourism demand and, by extension, rental performance. For sellers and developers, the route may help marketing to Indonesian buyers who already know Bali’s property market and may want a second island base with different ownership structures, visa options and pricing. What remains to be seen is whether the service holds its frequency and load factors beyond the launch period, and whether Indonesian visitors shift toward Phuket over other Thai destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the new Bali-Phuket flight affect Phuket property demand?

Not directly or immediately. Easier access from Indonesia supports tourism demand, which underpins rental villa performance. Over time, repeat visitors from Indonesia may develop an interest in Phuket property, especially if they already know Bali’s villa market.

How many Indonesian visitors does Thailand currently receive?

TAT data shows 429,778 Indonesian arrivals from 1 January to 7 September 2026. Phuket ranks among the five leading destinations for Indonesian visitors, alongside Bangkok, Songkhla, Chon Buri and Krabi.

What does the route mean for villa rental owners?

The 700 additional weekly seats from Bali may support incremental rental demand, particularly in shoulder seasons or on weekdays when direct access matters more. Whether that translates into bookings depends on sustained load factors and how Indonesian visitors choose accommodation.

Is this the only new route from Indonesia to Thailand?

No. TransNusa also launched a Jakarta-Bangkok service on 6 August 2026, one month before the Bali-Phuket route. Both are part of a broader agreement between TAT and the airline to expand air connectivity.

What remains uncertain?

It is not yet clear whether the four-times-weekly service will hold its frequency and passenger loads beyond the launch period, or whether Indonesian travel patterns will shift toward Phuket over other Thai destinations in response.
